The Hybla Valley/Gum Springs Community lies at the center of SFDC’s coverage of Richmond Highway and extends from the intersection of the Napper Road intersection to the intersection with Lockheed Drive. Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, pictured above, is a large regional health center located in Gum Springs, and recently completed a substantial expansion and renovation.
Gum Springs is the oldest African-American community in Fairfax County and was formally established in 1833 by former slave West Ford, himself freed by George Washington. Gum Springs became a sanctuary for runaways and freedmen. Many of the area’s 2500 residents can trace their families back to the original inhabitants of Gum Springs.
Hybla Valley contains the largest concentration of retail along the Richmond Highway Corridor. In 2013, Costco opened on the site of an old movie theatre, the “Multiplex Cinemas,” and is a regional shopping destination. Nearby restaurants include local favorite, Mama’s Kitchen, and Tacos El Costalilla, which has received several outstanding reviews.
