Transportation remains an enduring challenge on the Richmond Highway Corridor. The scale of future development of Southeast Fairfax County depends on improvements to the Richmond Highway Corridor’s transportation infrastructure. Substantial progress has been made, notably the opening of Jeff Todd Way, connecting Richmond Highway to Telegraph Road, and the widening of Richmond Highway from Telegraph Road to Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

To address the lack of quality direct mass-transit in the form of rail or bus rapid transit (BRT) and mitigate congestion, Fairfax County has launched Embark Richmond Highway, an initiative focused on creating a multimodal future for the Corridor that includes widening and the implementation of BRT.
