Faces of 1 Sculpture Exhibit Unveiled on Rt 1

Faces of 1: A Celebration of Community Through Public Art

The Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) is proud to unveil Faces of 1, a groundbreaking public art initiative that brings ten unique sculptures to the Richmond Highway corridor. Created by renowned artist Michael Alfano, this sculpture program celebrates the spirit, resilience, and diversity of the Southeast Fairfax community while marking a major milestone in SFDC’s ongoing placemaking efforts.

What is Faces of 1?

Faces of 1 is more than just an art exhibit—it’s a celebration of the stories and people that shape our community. Each of the ten sculptures embodies themes of connection, transformation, and identity, inviting residents and visitors to reflect on the shared experiences that define Richmond Highway. These sculptures are strategically placed along the corridor, transforming familiar spaces into engaging destinations that encourage exploration and interaction.

Why Public Art?

Public art like Faces of 1 plays a vital role in SFDC’s placemaking strategy. By incorporating creative, thought-provoking installations into the corridor, SFDC is enhancing the area’s aesthetic appeal while fostering a sense of pride and belonging. These sculptures create opportunities for meaningful connection, helping residents and visitors alike see Richmond Highway as more than a thoroughfare—it’s becoming a place to gather, connect, and celebrate.

“Public art has the power to transform spaces and bring people together,” said Evan Kaufman, SFDC Executive Director. “Faces of 1 is a reflection of the resilience and vibrancy of the Richmond Highway community, and we’re excited to share these stories through art.”

Tying into Placemaking

The Faces of 1 exhibit is just one part of SFDC’s broader vision to reimagine the Richmond Highway corridor. Over the past year, SFDC has led several placemaking projects, including large-scale murals like the newly completed “Wild Haven” on the Bank of America building in Hybla Valley. Together, these projects are beautifying the streetscape, celebrating the community’s identity, and creating spaces that feel inviting and vibrant.

By integrating art into the corridor, SFDC is not only enhancing its appearance but also creating lasting value for residents, visitors, and businesses. These projects bring people together, encourage exploration, and showcase the incredible culture and character of the Richmond Highway area.
